SIX MILE LAKE |
| This is my favourite lake for fun fishing. Lots of bass, very little pressure with a very scenic location. Barrie Bassmasters have held a tournament her most years for the last 5 or so. Last year we elected to have a BBQ after the event as it is an excellent location for that activity with our launch being in the Provincial Park. The lake has a reputation for lots of smaller fish, but last year we had the largest weights by far for this lake,(Results 6 mmile lake)and in pre-fish my partner and I had huge bags. However, on the down side I had some friends up for a fun fish and had the worse day I have ever had on this lake ( only about 6 bass) There is about an equal number of smallies and largemouth, and last year we weighed in exactly equal numbers. In my experience the smallies tend to average slightly larger, and I try to key on them. This is a difficult lake to navigate, and you will do well to bring a GPS as there are lots of islands and all the shorelines look the same. Very easy to get lost. Tons of rocks just below the lake surface, but the cottager's association does a great job of marking danger spots. You can get a lake map at Six Mile Lake Marina, but a GPS is still your best bet. There is almost every type of cover here possible, lilly pads, lots of millfoil and coontail, trees in the water, docks and rocky areas for smallies. Unless you are fishing very shallow you are likely to get either type of bass on every cast. Lures to use: The fish here tend not to be very fussy, spinnerbaits, worms, tubes and especially top water, mostly poppers all work. My favorite lure here is a Zoom trick worm rigged wacky style, for both largemouth and smallies. In our club tournament my partner and I caught about 18 bass and all but two were caught on that lure. Not enough big ones thou as we finished third overall. There are lots of pike in this lake, very few walleye, some crappie(although I have never caught one) and no muskies that I have heard of. |
