SPARROW LAKE
This is a very popular lake for the Barrie Bassmaster's members. It has great bass fishing, both largemouth and smallies, lots of pike (but not really large ones), a good number of walleye especially in the spring and a fair number of muskies, some very large. Lots of weeds and rocks. A very friendly lake as there is always someplace to hide if the weather blows up. Barrie Bassmasters does not have a bass tournament here this year but our open pike tournament is on May 7th, 2008, and the Ontario Bass Federation is holding their Provincial 6 Man Team event here in late September. Most of us launch at Lauderdale Marine at the south end of the lake off South Sparrow Lake Rd.
May 17th,2008. Targeted fish was Pike Sparrow Lake 8:30 AM to 12:45 PM Water Temp 56 to 58 degrees Depth 6 feet and less Wind was out of the south to start (light) then shifted out of the west and got quite strong General weather was rain and overcast skies Air Temp approx 10 degrees   We began fishing in 4 to 6 feet of water with the plan to move shallower Throwing spinner baits and swim baits As we moved shallower we were throwing pink soft stick baits (ended up being the bait of choice)   We ended the day with 5 pike in the 20" to 30" range being landed with 2 or 3 lost.  They hit the stick baits as they were twitched back to the boat.  The bite definitely got more aggressive as the morning progressed.  When the wind changed and increased we decided that we had, had enough for the day and called it quits.   We did also catch 3 largemouth bass on the same bait but they were caught when the bait was lying motionless on the bottom. May 24,2008 Target fish pike, but walleyes and crappies also. We launched from Lauderdale at about 8:30 and stayed until 1:30 or so. Very cold for this time of year and although the temp eventually approached 20C the wind make it feel much colder. Water temp was 57/58F, the same as Colin reported a week ago. We caught about 7 pike, on hard jerkbaits, spinnerbaits and one on a bucktail jig. Several bass on bucktails, swimbaits and a couple of crappie on a tiny grub off a tree. Best pike was about 4 lb, but most were 21/22 in. No walleyes.  Bill T
