ROAD TO THE BASSMASTER'S CLASSIC Each year every member of the Barrie Bassmaster's is eligible to compete in the Ontatio Bass Federation Nation provincial qualifier. This is a 2 day tournament with about 100 participants and the top 12 plus an alternate form Team Ontario for the following year. This team travels to the Eastern Divisional Tournament to compete against teams from the other Eastern Divisional States. There is usually little cost involved to the individual as most of the cost is picked up by the OBFN. The Divisional tournament is really two tournaments in one. The team with the highest weight wins the most money but one member of each team wins a trip to the Federation Nationals (again with most cost covered). The Nationals are usually held in late fall, somewhere in the southern states(2007 in Florida). Here you compete as an individual in a boat provided by Triton, for both the official practice (usually 2 days) and the 3 day tournament. Although the goal is to finish first, in reality all you have to do is beat the 7 other State Representatives in the Eastern Division. If you do this you are bound for the Classic and a shot at $500,000. Barrie Bassmasters has had numerous members qualify for Team Ontario, including at least one for the last 5 years. Although it may appear that a boater would have a great advantage, 3 of the last 6 qualifiers were non-boaters. In 2008, Gerry Heels will represent the club at the Eastern Divisionals. |
6 MAN TEAM EVENT The 6 man team event was started by BASS in 2007 as a method of having club members fish as a team. and advance through local, regional and national championship as a team. Each year there is a Ontario Qualifier in which each club can send teams and the top 6 teams qualify to compete in the 6 Man regional event. This event is located in the central area of the eastern area, and for the first two years has been in New York. In 2008 this event will be held on Lake Champlain, NY. Barrie has two teams which will compete at this event. The top 8 teams from this event will compete in the national event which will be held somewhere in the south/central US in Oct 2008. This year Barrie Bassmasters is eligible to send 4 teams(or 5 feams if our membership hits 60)to the Ontario qualifer. Our rules are that the anglers are rated according to the prior year's AOY list as long as their membership dues for the club are paid by Dec 31st.The balance of the anglers are rated according to the current year's AOY after the latest tournament before the selection date (Our Glouchester Pool event). As this year's Ontario 6 man team qualifier is on Sparrow Lake on Sept 28th, we should plan on selecting our teams at the Sept 9, 2008 meeting. Entry fees are $100.00 per person($600 per team) and there is no cash paid back. All of the funds are kept by the OBFN to help pay for entries in the regional event the following year. Barrie Bassmasters is organizing the Sparrow Lake event. This is a really great event as most tournament fishermen are used to competing as individuals or as 2 man teams. It is a different event when you have 3 two man teams co-operating, and trying to pre-fish and learn from each other as fish caught by one boat count for all. Barrie Bassmasters has really embraced this event and last year sent 3 teams (of the 8 competing) to the Glouchester Pool event and I expect will send 4 to the Sparrow Lake event. Mark your calender and make sure you are there at the Sept 9 meeting or pre-pay in advance to make sure you are on a team. If you are not a member of the Barrie Bassmasters and are a member of another OBFN club talk to your executive about competing in this event. If you are not a member of an OBFN club, this is another reason to join. |
